Surround mode has been a pain

I have a 650 sound bar and two R1 speakers. I tried for weeks to group them in surround mode, with no luck. Samsung support was useless!! Today, for grins, I tried again. For some reason it worked this time. I have no idea why now and not before. two issues now that they are in surround mode. 1-You lose all equalizer control, leaving you with a flat sound with too much mid range. 2- You cannot turn up the R1 speakers loud enough to really hear surround effect.
Otherwise, the streaming has worked just fine. The power and sound of the speakers, not in surround mode, has been plenty.
They definitely need to improve controllability in surround mode.
